Sennheiser Ambeo

The Sennheiser AMBEO VR Mic is a first-order Ambisonics microphone for recording 360-degree spatial audio. Four matched KE 14 condenser capsules, arranged in a tetrahedron, capture sound from every direction at a single point, so the recording can later be turned and shaped to follow the viewer's head in VR, 360 video or a game engine.

The mic sends four raw A-format channels, which you record on a four-channel recorder with matched preamps and phantom power, such as a Zoom F8. In post, Sennheiser's free AMBEO A-B format converter plugin turns them into Ambisonics B-format, ready for binaural headphone mixes, surround or spatial audio platforms. It's also a great tool for immersive ambiences and room tones in film, documentary and sound design, where you can choose the stereo or surround perspective after the fact.
