Shure SM7B

The Shure SM7B is a dynamic cardioid microphone and one of the best-known voice mics in the world, heard on radio, podcasts, streams and countless studio vocals. It gives a smooth, warm and close sound that flatters speech and singing alike.

The cardioid pattern focuses on the voice in front of it and rejects much of the room, keyboard clicks and other people at the table, which makes it a favourite for podcasts with several hosts in untreated rooms. Built-in shielding keeps hum from computer screens and lights out of the signal, and the large foam windscreen tames plosives. Two switches on the back add a bass roll-off and a presence boost, so you can shape the tone without EQ. It also does a great job on guitar amps and kick drums.

As a low-output dynamic mic, the SM7B needs a preamp with plenty of clean gain, or an in-line booster, to sound its best. Rent it in Montréal for a podcast, a voice-over, a livestream or a vocal session.
